2018: I Achieved my Two Goals!

First of all, Happy New Year, everyone! 2018 has been an incredible year for me. There have been ups and downs, but I’ve never felt that I’ve been better focused than I was in 2018.

I had two goals for 2018, to write every single day, at least 500 words, and to have 100 posts on this blog. I’m happy to say I did both of those and more. I also started learning French and German this year, and I started drawing, although that’s taken a back seat since the end of the summer.

I read more books this year than in previous years – although it never seems to enough, am I right?

For 2019, I’m hoping to spend more of my daily writing on stories and less on general ranting. Don’t worry, I have the better part of 3 1/2 months worth of daily writings to fuel the blog – but I want to start sharing some of the creative works as well. I’ve done a few of those recently. The Alamo Ghost Story, Vegan Zombies, Ryan’s Journal Entries, and Storytime With Jack. Those are a lot of fun, and I hope to have more examples of these in 2019.

But by far my most popular posts fall into two categories – Salsa Reviews and posts about writing and creativity. I’m definitely going to do more salsa reviews, as I’m still consuming the stuff by the buckets, but I’m also going to keep writing about the writing process as I find new methods that work for me.

For instance, I have a yearly log sheet that I’ve used since May of this year and liked it so much, I backdated it to March. I’ve just updated it for 2019 and will make it available to anyone who wants it. It’s just a simple log file, but it really helped me stay on task on those days I didn’t feel up to the work.

Here it is, in all it’s glory.

WordPress doesn’t let me embed it here, but you can follow the link and copy it yourself freely. It aggregates the count daily, monthly, and yearly. You can just to go File->Download As and grab whatever file format you like – or if you’re on Google, you can simply copy this to your Google Drive. If you have any trouble with it, reach out. I’m happy to email it around too if needed.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year’s Eve! As always, comments are appreciated – it’s the only way I know I’m reaching anyone.

  1. You have staying power Iain, most people I know never achieve all the goals they set up in the first week of a new year and you jumped over both your big guys. Kudos to you. I hope the silly season didn’t have you suffering under the burden of your side of the family making it unenjoyable and that you had a wow of a time. Vegan Zombies sounds pretty good to me, love to read how you manoeuvre around that one. Happy 2019, hopes it brings all good things to you.

    1. Thank you, Therese! No, the season is lovely – we actually got to spend time enjoying the majesty of the season for once. Thanks, I’m stubborn if nothing else… I’m a little worried that my goals will essentially be the same this year, and I might get bored of them, but I know how to deal with that now – butt in chair and just soldier through it. Happy 2019 to you as well!
